New fiction!
After a very long time away from publishing short stories, I've got a short short in the latest issue of The Walrus. It's part of a segment called Noir Canada:
The noir novel has long been a staple of urban American fiction. But what about Canada? The Walrus asked Canadian novelists to sketch their cities as grittier, sexier, and darker than you might ever have imagined . . .Mine is set in Vancouver, naturally. See if you can guess the location.

Yeah that's a great piece! Congrats. Love the Walrus too.
A couple of clever readers have guessed the setting of "Terminal City" is "Hastings Street," which is akin to guessing "Yonge Street" in Toronto--a route which runs all the way, I believe, to the Ontario-Manitoba border town of Rainy River. Hence, Hastings is not wrong, yet not right enough.
Hastings and Abbott...
Or Hastings and Clarke. One Spring morning at 7:00 I saw a woman in a similar condition as your crashed-out character...she was crossing Clark and Hastings diagonally, stopping traffic as she walked out in front of cars, and crying and looking like she was going to fall down. And me watching, on my way to work.
Your story took me back to that place. It's something, seeing this darkness in daylight and still not doing anything...window glass your shield. Thanks, Char.
It's not Hastings and Abbott. But, HF, Clarke is close.
The hint is in the title.
